Be an Egg or a Potato

There’s this quote kinda thing I’d like to share with you guys… I dont know if you already know it or not but it goes like this…

The same boiling water that softens the potato and hardens the egg.

It’s about what you’re made of, not the circumstances

~Unknown

I really liked this one and felt like sharing it cause it sure is something we can remind ourselves in hard times.

What does this quote actually mean?

Again, it depends on the perspective.

We can see it in two ways.

First Possibility:

If the situation is bad then you can either let it break you down (like a potato), or use the pressure to turn you harder (like an egg) for future hardships.

Second Possibility:

It could mean the reverse. No matter how harsh the situations are, you can either let the bad conditions to turn you harsh and lose your real self. Or you can learn from it to become softer and more understanding towards others by helping to overcome the hardships.

Well that leaves us with two ideas.

I don’t know it’s actual meaning but this is my understanding and I’m going with both as both are great ways to think about it.

What do you think about this one?

I’d love to hear if you have other perspectives, ideas or thoughts about it!

Thanks for reading!

  1. I like your interpretations best, but it would also mean that no matter who are what you are, you can become successful, (especially when fried)!!! πŸ™‚

  3. It actually means that it’s not about the problem or the situations or the conditions that you’re in that makes you tough or soft, makes you win or fail. The thing that makes or breaks you depends only on what you’re made of the hardship that you’re going through is being dealt with a lot of other people as well but you winning or losing depends on your will power on what you’re made of.

  5. If life beats you down, you can either turn hardened towards others experiencing hard times, or you can choose to show compassion because of your own experiences. That always works for me. I haven’t seen that truism in quite a while. So nice to see it surface again!
